Antenatal classes – sometimes called birth education or pregnancy classes – help you and your partner understand what to expect during labour, birth, and those early newborn days. They’re not just about the birth itself. They’re about building confidence, asking your questions in a safe space, and often meeting other expecting parents who become some of your greatest support people.
In New Zealand, classes are offered by a range of providers including midwives, nurses, and specialist educators. Some are hospital-based, others are independent. Some are held in-person, others online – so there’s genuinely something for every whānau.
Most providers recommend booking your class somewhere between 28 and 32 weeks of pregnancy – early enough that you have time to put your learnings into practice, but close enough to your due date that it all feels relevant.
That said, popular classes in smaller areas can fill up fast, so it’s worth searching early even if you’re not quite ready to commit. Many providers are happy to provisionally hold a spot for you.
All providers listed on Hey Māmā are real, active businesses operating across Aotearoa. We encourage you to visit their website and read reviews before booking – and trust your instincts about who feels right for you.
Costs vary depending on the provider and format. Some hospital-based classes are free or low cost. Independent classes typically range from $150–$400+ for a full course. Online classes can be a more affordable and flexible option. Always check directly with the provider for current pricing.
Absolutely – and most providers actively encourage it! Partners play such an important role in labour support, and antenatal classes are a great way for them to feel prepared and involved. Check with your chosen provider as some have specific partner sessions.
We’re always growing our directory! In the meantime, check whether your local DHB or midwife offers classes, or consider an online option – many of our listed providers offer nationwide online courses that are just as comprehensive.
